Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts - Gatlinburg, TN

Overview

This workshop combines the making of faceted and altered ceramic forms with hands-on soda glazing and firing. Participants will explore wheel-throwing with the instructor’s spiral technique as well as slip decoration. The workshop will begin with an introduction to glaze layering strategies, wadding, and kiln loading. Students will be expected to bring bisque-fired work to glaze and load into the soda kiln early in the week, allowing the firing to run alongside demonstrations and making time. As the kiln candles and fires, the focus will shift to form development through throwing demonstrations, and faceting and altering techniques. Surface demonstrations will include porcelain slip decoration applied with a hake brush. Students can expect to leave the workshop with fired soda work, works-in-progress, and a clearer understanding of how form, surface, and soda firing intersect in practice.
