Faceting, Altering, and Surface Development on the Wheel Santa Cruz Clay

Thurs, June 18th @ 5- 8 pm

In this focused workshop, Dwayne Sackey will demonstrate and teach his approach to faceting and altering wheel-thrown forms as a way to introduce movement, asymmetry, and surface tension into functional pottery.

The workshop will begin with a demonstration covering form development on the wheel, timing and decision-making around when to facet and alter, and how these techniques influence both structure and surface. Dwayne will also discuss how he thinks about proportion, rhythm, and gesture, and how these ideas carry through trimming and glazing.

Participants will then have guided hands-on time to explore these techniques on their own work. Emphasis will be placed on developing sensitivity to clay at different stages, using simple tools effectively, and making intentional choices rather than overworking forms.

This workshop is well-suited for intermediate to advanced potters, though motivated beginners with solid centering skills are welcome.

What Will Be Covered:

    •    Throwing forms specifically intended for faceting and altering

    •    Timing: when and how to alter without compromising structure

    •    Creating movement and gesture on the wheel

    •    Tool use and hand techniques for controlled alteration

    •    How altered forms affect trimming and surface development

    •    Q&A throughout the session

Materials:

Clay and basic tools provided by Santa Cruz Ceramics. Participants are welcome to bring preferred tools.

Workshop with Visiting Artist Dwayne Sackey

  • Google Calendar ICS

Workshop & Loading Dates: June 19th-21st

Unload Date: June 27th

Overview:

This workshop centers on wood–soda firing as a tool for surface development, exploring how atmosphere interacts with glazes and clay surfaces, and how responsive decision-making during the firing shapes final results. Participants will investigate strategies for layered glaze surfaces and thoughtful placement within the kiln, with an emphasis on how heat, soda introduction, and airflow influence outcomes.

The workshop approaches soda firing holistically, from glazing and loading choices through active firing decisions, with the goal of building a deeper understanding of how surfaces evolve inside the kiln. Demonstrations will include throwing and altering forms on the potter’s wheel that are well suited for atmospheric firing.

Overview

This workshop combines the making of faceted and altered ceramic forms with hands-on soda glazing and firing. Participants will explore wheel-throwing with the instructor’s spiral technique as well as slip decoration. The workshop will begin with an introduction to glaze layering strategies, wadding, and kiln loading. Students will be expected to bring bisque-fired work to glaze and load into the soda kiln early in the week, allowing the firing to run alongside demonstrations and making time. As the kiln candles and fires, the focus will shift to form development through throwing demonstrations, and faceting and altering techniques. Surface demonstrations will include porcelain slip decoration applied with a hake brush. Students can expect to leave the workshop with fired soda work, works-in-progress, and a clearer understanding of how form, surface, and soda firing intersect in practice.

Course Fee : $760.00
