Join Dwayne as he delves into his faceting and altering process, throwing and altering forms simultaneously to create gesture and movement. Materials, glazes, and firing are included with registration.
This workshop is geared towards those who throw at an intermediate level. As potters, we spend our first years on the wheel trying to throw forms that are uniform. Ironically, the better we get at doing so, the more we yearn for the dynamism of irregularity, for something that has a sense of movement and rhythm.
This hands-on workshop will explore how to capture the movement of the turning clay, and how to use deliberate alterations to bring gesture and movement to your forms, reflecting the path the clay has taken to arrive at its final form. Students will learn how to throw, alter, and shape their forms in one fluid process, and how Dwayne implements faceting in a unique way to provide dramatic surfaces and undulating forms.
Off the wheel, Dwayne will also cover his approach to layering surface decoration, applying porcelain slip and underglaze to create even more expressive surfaces, as well as the use of sodium silicate. Finishing considerations for faceted and textured work will be discussed, and time will be allotted for a Q&A session and general group discussion.
