Workshop with Visiting Artist Dwayne Sackey

Workshop & Loading Dates: June 19th-21st

Unload Date: June 27th

Overview:

This workshop centers on wood–soda firing as a tool for surface development, exploring how atmosphere interacts with glazes and clay surfaces, and how responsive decision-making during the firing shapes final results. Participants will investigate strategies for layered glaze surfaces and thoughtful placement within the kiln, with an emphasis on how heat, soda introduction, and airflow influence outcomes.

The workshop approaches soda firing holistically, from glazing and loading choices through active firing decisions, with the goal of building a deeper understanding of how surfaces evolve inside the kiln. Demonstrations will include throwing and altering forms on the potter’s wheel that are well suited for atmospheric firing.
